A-Basin Spring Bumps

Postby rondo320 » Fri May 20, 2016 9:26 pm

Skied the last 10 out of 12 days at the Basin. Today was day 150 for the season.
Monday morning was pure winter and the rest of the days have been a mix of cool and cloudy to hot and sunny.
The snow is holding up but today and tomorrow will probably do some harm with some very warm temps.
No snow till maybe next Thursday, so get it while you can.
Pali was still open today and Ramrod is just in great shape.
I'll be there Tuesday through Friday.
Anybody else?

Last four days have been super spring skiing days.
Even today, despite the not so great forecast, had a really good start.
I left a little after noon, when the predicted clouds rolled in and the cold and wind replaced the morning sunshine.
With the consistent morning sun, Ramrod softened first on skier's left next to the trees which made it somewhat skiable by 9:45 despite it being colder today than the last three days.
Will miss tomorrow because there will be a few inches of snow tonight which means dust on crust with no significant softening due to the predicted clouds and cool temps.
The weekend appears to be better weather but expect major crowds due to the Memorial Day 3 day holiday, the concert series and the Sunday Brew Fest.
I may attempt Monday afternoon when everybody will be leaving to beat the holiday rush back to Denver.
Tuesday through Thursday are definite for me.

Great skiing for June 1st.
Partly cloudy and warm.
50 inch reported base.
Bumps are in good shape on Ramrod.
A-Basin announced a bonus weekend so they will close Sunday June 5th and reopen Friday the 10th and close again on Sunday the 12th.

If you are planning on being at the Basin next week for their bonus weekend, the lifts open at 8:30 but close early at 2:30.
So don't show up late and be disappointed with the early closing time.
Temps should be in the high 60's so it should soften up early.
Didn't ski this weekend but from the web cams it appears that the bottom of Ramrod is closed.
Hopefully, the top of Ramrod will stay open for next weekend.

Don't waste your time going to A-Basin this weekend.
I skied today and the conditions have deteriorated significantly from last week.
There are only a few runs open at the top that funnel into one run to the bottom.
There are no bumps and the runs are semi-groomed deep slush with lots of debris especially towards the bottom.
The debris is from transferring the slush from other runs like Ramrod which is closed and looking very sad.
Even Lake Reveal for pond skimming looked grim. All the approaches are deeply rutted and have not been groomed. People were falling before they even got to the lake which looked significantly smaller than in previous years.
The only reason to go this weekend is to experience summer skiing if you've never done it and only if you have a pass.
It's definitely not worth a lift ticket.
It wasn't crowded today but tomorrow may be different.
The high today was around 70 and the slush doesn't freeze at night so it is soft early.
If you do go, bring plenty of beer for the parking lot otherwise known as "the beach" because after a run or two that is where you'll be.
