spring skiing at A-Basin

Postby rondo320 » Fri May 02, 2014 9:56 pm

After about 4 days of winter, the sun started emerging yesterday, Thursday May 1st. It really didn't soften much and the bumps on Ramrod had a little ice on the sides.
Today, Friday May 2 it started to soften up with more sun and warmer temps than yesterday.
The lines on Ramrod need to be developed just a little bit more. Hopefully the weekend crowd of bump skiers will form some good lines.
A-Basin has plenty of snow and an excellent base (over 80 inches). It hasn't been very warm so far, anticipate a fairly long season maybe even into the start of summer.
There is a mogul course west of the Norway lift ready for SSVC's 8 day mogul clinic starting tomorrow.
Unfortunately, my schedule won't allow me to participate in either of the two 4 day sessions.

Currently a 77" reported base.
7" in the last two days and 12" to 24" forecasted for Mother's Day weekend.
Winter ain't over yet!

20" of new snow in the last 5 days.
80" base reported.
The bumps on Ramrod were good but the face of the bumps was about 1/4 ice. Since the high was 25 they didn't soften even with partly cloudy skies. Other than the patches of ice the snow was definitely mid-winter quality.
There's a warming trend so the next few days should be just about perfect.

A foot of new in the last two days.
85 inch base.
Spring may arrive this week.
With snow like this they could stay open through the end of June but they won't.
A-Basin closes June 1st then reopens for the next weekend.
The old days when skiers ran the resort are over.
Back then, they would be open until the last ribbons of snow on the upper runs melted.
Those days disappeared when they partnered with the evil empire, Vail Associates.

Some really great spring skiing the last two days at the Basin.
Started softening at 10:30 and was pretty good by 11:30.
The bumps are well developed on Ramrod with quite a few decent lines.
With warm temps and sunny skies, spring skiing doesn't get any better than this.
Enjoy it before it disappears.

72 inch base with lots of sun and 55 for the high with a good breeze to keep you from overheating.
You can't ask for better spring conditions.
The bumps on Ramrod still have great lines.
I got there at 10:15 and the bumps were soft.
No need to wait for them to unfreeze anymore.
Summer seems to be here.
The rumors are that they hope to extend to the 4th of July but only weekends after this week.

A-Basin has announced that after June 1st they will be open for three more three-day weekends.
That's a total of 10 days of June skiing and taking the season into the official start of summer.

Great bumps and lines on Ramrod today considering it's June 1st.
Not too crowded for a Sunday.
The Basin closes today until Friday.
The new hours for the next 3 weekends are 8:30 to 2:30.

A-Basin reopened today for the first of three weekends in June.
The reported base is 48".
The snow on the bumps on Ramrod had a unique consistency due to the area being closed for four days and the warm temperatures.
Once there was skier traffic on Ramrod, the bumps returned to normal late season slush but surprisingly good for June 6.
At 11:45 a brief snow shower moved through with some distant thunder but after that most of the clouds headed east towards Denver.
The rumor is that the bumps on Ramrod won't be there after this weekend.

I was up today- the slush bumps were in full effect early. Beware of base chewing, edge crushing bald spots at the bottom of ramrod!

Yesterday, Saturday, was a better day than Friday. Less clouds and wind.
I'll be there today about 10.
Look for the light gray hoodie with "Copper" on the front, black helmet and mediocre bump technique.

When A-Basin closed yesterday at 2:30 it looked like winter with an intense snow shower.
The web camera this morning shows about an inch or two of new covering the old dirty snow. It looks more like December than June.
The area reopens Friday.
Hopefully the bumps on Ramrod will still be there.

Felt like a blizzard driving home from Denver yesterday. I had about an inch in my yard this morning.

Lower Ramrod is closed and they are removing the snow as I write this. They'll use the snow to build up the base area.
According to Al's blog they don't know if the bumps will stay on upper Ramrod for tomorrow's reopening.
Without at least one bump run on the mountain, it's not worth it.
There's a bump course on the upper mountain, but that's only for special people not us peons.
